Chapter

Fifteen

Before Alysander would allow his daughters to help, he lay down several important ground rules. In his mind, they weren’t too overly cautious. He simply couldn’t allow his two precious daughters to go wandering around the city, looking for a fiend.

“Nay,” Orabillis said as they sat at Forvelith’s table enjoying their evening meal. “Anyone but him.”

The him to which she was referring was, of course, one Gavin MacKendrick.

Alysander had suggested Rory and Gavin take turns guarding his daughters. He’d known the two young men for over twenty years. They knew the streets and alleyways of Edinburgh better than most. Besides the men he had brought with him, he trusted his daughters’ safety to no one else.

“I will nae allow ye to go alone,” Alysander told her.

“Then ask Red John or one of the other men. Anyone but Gavin MacKendrick.”

Alysander pursed his lips together in consternation. Why must this daughter of his make things so difficult? If she hadn’t done what she’d done at the castle, then they would not now be having this conversation.

“I fear I must agree with Orabillis,” Muriale said as she sliced off a bit of ham from the tray in front of her. “I, for one, would rather concentrate on helping find this madman than to keep Orabillis from killing Gavin MacKendrick.”

Orabillis smiled rather deviously. “I would do it away from ye. Away from any potential witnesses.”

Forvelith rolled her eyes at both young women. “I have to agree with yer father on this. Ye cannae go alone.”

“Again, I ask why Red John cannae go with us,” Orabillis said.

“Because Red John sticks out like a horse with two tails,” Alysander replied. “He terrifies most people due to his sheer size. And he is nae kent for his gentle spirit.”

Muriale had to agree. “Da is right. And so is Orabillis. I think Rory might be the better choice. He seems a kind enough man.”

Wishing to be done with the argument, Alysander stuffed the last bit of bread into his mouth. “Verra well. I shall ask Rory to assist.
